The Portuguese territory is organized in two autonomous regions (Azores and Madeira) and in eighteen districts on the continent. They are:

Each district is divided into municipalities and each municipality, in turn, is made up of parishes. Municipalities are managed by an executive body, the City Council, and also have a Municipal Assembly, which is a deliberative body. Parishes are considered to be the smallest administrative divisions in the country, managed by Parish Councils.
